But they have all these jobs available to bring in -- they import workers to do those types of job. All right. We would keep all of our cardboard. These were Iraquis who had not been taken care of, they were starving, some of them did not have any shoes, and they knew the Americans would take care of them. They don't trust the government. And what happened was we had come across an underground hospital that couldn't support all the weight of all the track vehicles. And my kids had never experienced -- We moved to Indianola by this point. And so those were the first two casualties I had to deal with, and I really had not had to deal with too much death before. We were probably poor, but I didn't consider myself poor. I don't have a Purple Heart, which is the one that nobody wants to get. I know our mesh sergeant would go down and by fresh eggs and a few fresh vegetables, if he could get them, and he actually paid cash. So I started at the Post Office in November of '77. And he promised me it would change, and it did. I was assigned to Second Armory Cavalry Regime, a tank unit again. He stopped his assault when two hunters came across the scene and recognised Murphy. But they look back on that time as -- I actually had more time, free time. I think the Army has learned from that as they try to keep more units together. So that's kind of my war experiences. Murphy was sentenced before the Sex Offenders Act was introduced in 2001 so he is not subject to a post-release supervision order. Despite such efforts to allay fears, such allegations continue to regularly appear.[19]. Those guys probably didn't teach me very well. So it's a lot different mind set of the American people. And it turned out that day that we were able to round everybody up, and so we got -- After everybody had called home and said we're coming home this day, then everybody wanted to call home again and say we are coming home a couple days early, so -- So we got back to Fort McCoy, it didn't take us long, again, a small unit. Although only convicted of this crime, Murphy is regarded as being the prime suspect in the disappearance of a number of young women in the mid to late 1990s in the Leinster area, when he was known to be living in the region. I got back to Des Moines and there were four people to greet me and that was my welcome home. Saudi Arabia was a different type. It was really -- I grew up fast in a year's time. As a matter of fact, he was allowed to stay on active duty and he made a One-Star General before he retired. Got them out the door, we graduated and got everybody out. I got back. But I really saw what poverty was in Vietnam as we'd go through some of the villages. And if you wanted to listen to the radio, you could get the American Forces Network but you had to be up on the -- either on top of the dirt mound or sand mound and hold your radio up in the air to pick it up. The day the war started, the ground war started in February, we moved to a -- up about ten miles south of the Kuwait border and established a prisoner of war camp. We were kind of out in the middle of nowhere. For more than a decade, there's been a deepening mystery around Dublin: a growing number of young women have disappeared. And then the sixth day the prisoners -- I would tell you that these were more -- these were not -- These were soldiers that had given up. They thought they would be able to hide them, but you get pretty good at looking where you're not -- Plus, you dump everything out. It was in the middle of the Monsoon, and one of our platoons had got stranded on high ground and needed some food so we sent a rescue mission out to get them some food and ammunition. [18][19][20] The "sightings" alleged often occur in rural villages and towns and have sometimes resulted in mild panic, in one case resulting in an arson attack on the premises where Murphy was alleged to have been staying. It just kind of shows my military career, and I just brought in some of my medals that I earned, the patches of the units that I was assigned to. There were places -- There was a beach you could go to, and there was a USO Center where they could go to the library and get different things, but we always made sure we knew where everybody was, because I thought -- You know, I needed to know where everybody was. I really can't type, but if you need somebody, I can at least -- and the issue had become that the two company clerks were both leaving at the same time, both within a week or so, and he needed a replacement, and so he tagged me and I ended up training about two weeks, had no idea about Army administration or anything because I had been in a tank the little time I had been in the Army. Such an incident happened where he was alleged to have been resident at a popular country lodge hotel in the Glen of Aherlow, Co. South Tipperary. I didn't go with anybody else. So every piece of equipment was taken to the car wash. We made the car washes. If you have anything, if you put it down the chute, nobody is going to know it's from you. It's not like -- and then you get an occasional restaurant. Tanks can for a little bit, but a personnel carrier can float, actually propel itself around, but it got caught up on some bamboo and the water rushed in and the water pressure forced the driver out, and what was before an open field was now a raging river, because this was a Monsoon. He drank and smoked cannabis regularly and at times approached and attempted to strike up conversation with young women. So you go through a station where you take your duffle bag, but we give them a briefing and tell them, okay, you're going to go in the amnesty area, there's no cameras here. So then they finally came to us and said, "Okay, you guys get ready to go home." They have animals, they grow gardens, but it's -- There is no grocery stores. So everything was below ground, so the bulldozer just pushed the sand up and then they would flatten out the bottom of this trench, and then you'd put your tent up on the flat surface, but you had to walk the incline to get up. I have three Meritorious Service Medals, serving as sergeant, the command sergeant and different levels. Finally, we got some leaders that decided we needed to be more ready to go do our missions, not just flood duty or tornado duty, but prepared to -- And the Army was starting to come around and give us more equipment. And the first time we did that, I got to thinking, well, why are we throwing our trash out? They get money from the government but they don't trust the government. I have two of these Legions of Merits. So we actually, as a family, it was really a good time for all of us. When I wasn't in school we had all the weekends off. Email.
